New Lawn...

Post by gardenqueen254 on 22/02/08, 12:00 pm

Hi all,

I have just taken up my old tatty lawn and was wondering if anyone could advise what I should do now?
There is already some okay soil there but should I be putting some better quality topsoil down first or doing any kind of weed treating or fertilising before I get my new turf and put it down?

Hi there,

it is entirely up to you whether or not you lay down new soil. Decide if your existing soil is suitable and give it a good rake over either way.

For laying new turf you need to be aiming for at least 2 inches, but preferably 4, of really nice, sandy topsoil. A few stones are not the end of the world and if anything will just help to improve drainage.

If you decide to go for new soil then please remember to check out the quality of it before you make a purchase. If you visit the BTSA there is a brief but useful guide on there for choosing the right soil.

In short you do not want anything that has been reclaimed from skip waste because your turf will not thank you for laying it down onto soil that is full of cement dust and bricks.

Most good topsoil should be delivered weed free, you may find it still contains seeds (weeds are not the end of the world - if they won't grow in your soil then nothing else will either!) unless you go for a sterilised soil, although this will be a lot more expensive - you can just put down a pre-emergent weed killer if you are worried but remember to follow the instructions carefully and leave enough time before you put your turf down.

Choose yourself a quality topsoil or if you are happy with your existing then just rake it over and get yourself some nice, green turf and you are pretty much good to go. It is easier than you might think to lay and maintain turf, although you might consider an artificial turf if you want to rid yourself of the Sunday mowing ritual!

I hope this has helped you out, feel free to ask more questions,

Bests,
Katie.

Hi there,
I found a guide linking from the main Dandy's site.
It looks like a pretty straight forward one.
