USES FOR TOP SOIL IN CONTAINER GARDENING

Post by virendra on 17/02/08, 01:29 am

It is just before spring in Washington State and I had bought 10 bags of top soil last autumn which is still unopened. How can I use the top soil now? More specifically, how can I use it for new plantings both in the yard and in pots for spring/autumn annual and perennial flowers?

Hi Virendra,
it depends what kind of topsoil you have really - most have a pH of 6 to 8 which means they are fairly neutral and most plants will get on fine with that.
You can of course mix in a bit of multi-purpose or other compost to suit your plants to help them along.

I have got a very long list of plants and pH preferences if you want to know what a specific plant would be better suited to compost wise; fire away if you do.

Bests,

Katie.
