Topsoil measurements

Post by linda on 02/04/08, 11:09 am

In comparing prices and coverage I am confused by the mixture of metric and imperial volumes, weights and areas used: please verify.

1 tonne equates to how many cubic metres?
Thank you.

Hi Linda,
I believe that 1 tonne of topsoil will cover around 25 - 30 sq mtrs at a depth of about 50mm.
As far as I can tell there are approximately 1.3 tonnes to the cubic metre where soil is involved.
I reckon that when you order a 1 tonne bulk bag it will be delivered about 3/4 full - so just shy of a full cubic metre.
That said I have seen some soils which are very light and so are sold by the cubic metre instead - it really depends on what you are using it for though as these very light soils seem to be quite specialist.
I hope this has helped you out a bit.
Bests,
T.P.
