Over seeding

Post by peter on 14/03/08, 03:57 pm

I am over seeding about 300 sq metres of lawn and I need to know which topsoil is best and what the difference is between the organic and lawn topsoil.

How deep would you suggest I need to apply ...5mm?.It is in effect as a covering for the seed.

Is it fine and dry enough to be spread via a broadcast spreader?

Hi Peter,
if you are seeding over an existing lawn then I would suggest that you go for a Topdressing which is a sand/soil mix of approx 70% sand and 30% screened soil.
5mm would be about right for this project and a spreader would be ideal.
Topdressing is mostly used by greenkeepers on football pitches and golf courses so for your large lawn area it would be perfect.
The large ratio of sand to soil means that the seed will grow through and the sand will prevent over watering and will improve drainage.
I hope this has helped,
do get in touch again if you need anymore help.

Have a good weekend,

Bests,
Katie.

Thanks for your reply.

I have bought top dressing before and because they have been left outside they arrive wet and unable to spread. Can you clarify the 'dryness' of your products?

Hi Peter,
we do tend to keep most of the topsoils' undercover, however, it really does depend on the weather as we can't cover on all sides.
Usually any wetness will come from goods being outside during transit.
We do have hooded bags though which should protect the soil from the elements during transit.
Best thing I can suggest is to try and be as flexible as possible with your delivery dates and actually order when the weather is really dry and also express that you need the topdressing dry and delivered in a hooded bag and this should be fine.
I hope this helps,
have a great Easter weekend,
Katie.
