raising the lawn
hi
i am planning to raise a major section of my back garden about 30 feet across and 10 feet front to back and need to raise it by about 2 feet. reasons are for decor and due to surrounding gardens / land being higher than my own garden causing exessive wetness particulalrly outside the summer months were it is almost unusable. can some one advise me on the best materials to utilise and any hints to help, i do intend to turf this section with borders around the edges for planting.
wish me and my back luck!!!!!
cheers

Re: raising the lawn
Hello,
to cover that area with soil you will need about 22 tonnes.
That probably seems like quite a scary amount and if it does seem a lot then that is largely due to the depth that you need to raise the area.
The best thing to do would be to get a lorry load - 20 to 21 tonnes of an unscreened, stony soil and cover the entire area up to the level you need. An unscreened soil will be cheaper and any stones in it will improve drainage across the area.
Once you have doe this, I would suggest that you use a screened soil on top to a couple of inches depth for any areas that are to be turfed or seeded and a topsoil with compost in it for any areas which will be planted - ideally you need about 8 inches of compost rich soil for planting.
I have put a couple of links below for the various products so that you can have a look.
You would probably want a couple of tonnes of Lawnmix for the turfing areas and maybe a tonne or so of Bordermix or Organic Topsoil for the borders depending on the size of the plots.
Unscreened soil
Lawnmix
Bordermix
Organic Topsoil
For the large amount of unscreened, ideally you want to be able to get a 21 tonne load in one hit to get the best price possible - this would be delivered on an 8 wheeler tipper vehicle that can typically get to any area that a bin lorry could, so it is likely that it would have to be tipped at the front of your property and barrowed round the back so you may want to call in some favours for that one!
21 tonnes of soil is approx 16 cubic metres to give you an idea of the pile size once tipped!
I hope this has helped.
