How far will a ton of gravel cover?

Post by Paul Dod on 11/02/08, 11:20 pm

Hello,

can someone tell me how far 1 ton of gravel will cover please? I have a driveway which is 18ft x 52ft. Also should i put a membrane down to stop the hardcore mixing in with the new gravel i buy? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul,
for your driveway you would need 3 to 3.5 tonnes for every 1 inch depth you require of gravel. An inch to an inch and a half is ample for covering a drive.
I would recommend that you use a 20mm gravel or slate as any larger is difficult to drive or walk on and any smaller is likely to scatter very easily and get stuck in tyre treads.
4 tonnes of hardcore would cover 18 x 52 ft at a depth of 1 inch.
Membrane is a great idea to stop weeds coming through and you can either put it under the hardcore or the gravel to do this.
If you are worried about the hardcore and gravel mixing then laying it between would prevent this from happening.
I hope this has helped you out, do get in touch again if you have any further queries.
Bests,
Katie.

How far does a tonne of gravel cover

Post by busybee on 26/02/08, 11:11 pm

We went to a local builders merchants in Luton, where we purchased what we thought was 2 tonnes! (2 x big builders bags) After spreading the bags over the area which my husband and i had worked out would take under 2 tonnes to fill. I was shocked to find that it had covered nothing like! Just over half the area.
My husband called the builders merchant who then told us that as a way to cut costs the merchant had reduced the size of their bulk bags down to just 700kg's! So not the tonne that we and i guess many other people expect when they buy one of this companies bags. I phoned trading standards up, but they said that because the company had sold it as a bulk bag and not by weight i could do nothing.

So if you do buy the gravel you need in bulk bags make sure you ask exactly how much the bag contains.

Since then i've found and used i've only used them twice for houses we do up to rent, but they have been great. Plus their bags seem to hold much more than this other bunch of cost cutting cowboys!
