Gravel for driveway/garden

Post by Ian on 22/01/09, 12:37 pm

Hi

We want to get our driveway and garden redone for as little as possible, and have settled on using railway sleepers to edge the area, then putting down a layer of sand and membrane before putting on a 3-4in layer of gravel. The driveway is 12mx3m, then there's a much smaller area which we're going to have potplants on (probably no more than 3mx2m). How much gravel and sand will we need (tonnage)?

Thanks loads!

Thanks for your question.
For every 1 inch of sand you will need about a tonne - 1.2 to be more exact.

For the gravel you will need approx 1 and a half tonnes (that will do both areas) for every 1 inch depth you require.

You don't need 3 - 4 inches for a driveway - this amount will be very difficult to walk on as it will have a sinking effect. 1 - 1.5 inches is ample if you are driving on it, so I would suggest that you go for 2 tonnes.

If you need to raise the level by that much then I would suggest that you forget the sand and use crusherrun (MOT type 1) instead. Put this down - roller it over to level it off then put down your membrane and finally an inch of gravel on top as a decorative finish.

For every inch of crusherrun on your driveway you will need about 2 tonnes.

I hope this has helped.

Do get in touch if you need any further advice.

Bests,

Katie.
